Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory so look and style are important, but functionality should be paramount.

When choosing sunglasses, it is important to ensure they provide the essential eye protection required to keep your eyes healthy. They must prevent damage to the eye from the sun's UV rays, especially on the vital macular area in the centre of the retina at the back of the eye. Even on a cloudy day, UV radiation can penetrate the eye so look for light reduction of up to 80% and large lenses that shield the eyes well. Wraparound sunglasses styles provide additional protection by shielding the eyes from peripheral glare.

Many sunglasses are designed for specific lifestyles and functions, for example driving glasses have high contrast lenses that allow the eye to react, even behind the windscreen, when light outside the vehicle is bright. Polarisation of the lenses helps to reduce glare from road surfaces and also to relax the eyes on long trips.

Sports sunglasses have tougher frames and tints to improve your game, for example enabling you to spot a white golf ball better against the green of the course. Watersports require polarised lenses to reduce reflective glare from the water surfaces and, as with all sports, it is best to make sure you have impact-resistant lenses.

Finally, but most importantly, don't forget children's sunglasses - it is especially important to protect their young eyes from the sun.
