Insight Optometrists are very pleased to add BlephEx® to their in-house treatment program for Dry Eyes. This new procedure helps fight Blepharitis, a major cause of dry eye syndrome.
What is Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is a chronic, inflammatory disease of the eyelid, caused when the regular bacteria of the lash line builds up over time. Usually regulated by your tears, the bacteria flourish causing crusty deposits on the lashes and a sticky film over the eye.
Worse still, your eye becomes inflamed and your Meibomian glands blocked, preventing oil production which stops the tears from evaporating thus preventing the lasting of the very tears that would help to ease your condition. This starts a downward spiral into extremely dry, red, itchy eyes, eventually compromising the health of your eyelid and tear glands.
The condition is actually very common, with a study reporting that over 82 million people in the US alone have blepharitis. A staggering 71% of people over the age of 65 were found to be sufferers.1
In the past, eye drops, artificial tears, cyclosporines, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines have been prescribed to ease the discomfort of Blepharitis. In order to try to eliminate it, the recommended treatment was to attempt to clean the eyelid margins with eye care fluid or baby shampoo, using a finger or cotton bud. As well as being invasive and tricky to do yourself, this had only limited effectiveness in removal of the bacteria.
How does BlephEx® Work?
The new BlephEx® equipment allows us to thoroughly clean along the eye lids and lashes, scrubbing them to reduce build-up of bacteria. This will almost immediately improve the symptoms and restart the natural cleaning cycle by allowing you to produce more of your own tears.2
The procedure lasts about 6-8 minutes while a patented disposable micro-sponge is used to clean and exfoliate along the lash lines. Most patients simply report a tickling sensation. Treatments are usually performed monthly and the number of treatments required depends on the severity of your condition.
In the long run, BlephEx® helps protect the structural integrity of your eyelid, reducing the probability of long term damage to your tear glands.
